Twelve Notes - World War Two

She was five months pregnant when they took her house by storm
She had to watch the soldiers take all the food she had in store
She felt her baby kick her belly, her other kids screamed in fear
She begged the enemy for mercy

The soldiers found her husband while he was plowing the fields
Surrounded by machine guns they forced him down, on his knees
As they were dragging him away from her the lieutenant turned around
Gave her a nod as if to promise that he'll try to help her out

The waste of war had been going on too long to tell right from wrong
The same hurt, the same heart beneath her apron and his uniform
Everyone simply did the best they could
To make it through the endless World War Two

Her anguish growing stronger with every week passing by
Until the day her husband walked back home, still alive
He had escaped the labor camp unhurt and she knew why
The lieutenant must have turned a blind eye, yeah
The lieutenant for some reason spared his life

The waste of war had been going on too long to tell right from wrong
The same hurt, the same heart beneath her apron and his uniform
Everyone simply did the best they could
To make sense of the endless World War Two

She gave birth on April 25th
While everyone was cheering on Main Street
And all the bells were ringing and the sun was shining
On the US soldiers parade

The waste of war had been going on too long, way too long
The same hurt, the same hearts beneath each apron and each uniform
And it was simply too good to be true
They'd come to see the end of World War Two
Everyone simply did the best they could
To celebrate the end of World War Two
