John Alex Cook - Free To A Good Home
I could tell by the message, she left on my phone
Said she was tired of calling and I could just stay gone
I wondered what little thing she'd found, to get worked up about
I'm not good at answering whether she calls or texts
I thought I'd done everything on my honey-do list
I thought one more drink and one more flop wouldn't get me thrown out
But I guess I forgot an item, or misplaced a sheet
I found her note on the counter, folded twice, nice and neat
It said you're free to walk right out the door
Don't let the doorknob hit your ass
You're like a six month old puppy dog
Not house broken yet
If you can find someone else to take you on
You'll be free to a good home
I sat down on a counter stool to think of what to say
But I felt it flex and it wouldn't hold my weight
As I stumbled across the kitchen floor... I remembered she told me it broke
I opened up the screen door to step out and take a breath
It slipped and stuck - another thing she told me to fix
And just like that a cartoon lightbulb went off above my head...
She used to call me her puppy in such a playful way
But I think I misunderstood what she was trying to say...
You're free to walk right out the door
Don't let the doorknob hit your ass
You're like a six month old puppy dog
Not house broken yet
If you can find someone else to take you on
You'll be free to a good home
So I went to Home Depot, for WD-40 and screws
Fixed the counter stool and got the screen door sliding smooth
But I also got a big dog house, I put under the trees
So I'll have somewhere to go next time she asks me to leave
You're free to walk right out the door
Don't let the doorknob hit your ass
You're like a six month old puppy dog
Not house broken yet
If you can find someone else to take you on
I'll put you up for adoption if this shit doesn't stop
You're free to a good home
