John Alex Cook - That Couch
I bought it in Target with an old girlfriend
And hauled it up three flights to stairs to my first apartment
We build it from picture book instructions that weren't quite right
We ate Chinese take out sitting on it the very first night
A metal frame and black, cushioned seat
That came flat packed, self-assembly
That couch has seen some get-togethers
And its share of break-ups
I skipped class on it a few times
Then skipped work as I grew up
It saw a few girl's backsides
Before I found my wife
There's things I'm glad it can't tell her about
Or I'd still be single, sitting on that couch
I sat on it to drink my coffee in the mornings
I found a friend passed out on it every now and then
Its where I'd eat chips and play old video games
And where my wife and I watched star wars on our first date
The first time we held hands was on that couch
And it was the first place we made out
That couch has seen some get-togethers
And its share of break-ups
I skipped class on it a few times
Then skipped work as I grew up
It saw a few girl's backsides
Before I found my wife
There's things I'm glad it can't tell her about
Or I'd still be single, sitting on that couch
That beer-stained second home didn't cost a lot of money
After all these years it looks like shit and it smells kinda funny
As we take it down the stairs, I think about
How glad I am that it can't rat me out
That couch has seen some get-togethers
And its share of break-ups
I skipped class on it a few times
Then skipped work as I grew up
It saw a few girl's backsides
Before I found my wife
There's things I'm glad it can't tell her about
Or I'd still be single, sitting on that couch
