Bruce Hilliard - Joey

Joey was the youngest kid of three and he looked the part
His brothers said he had a baby face but he had fire in his heart
He could compete at anything cause everything won
He learned fight for what he thought was right and he never used a gun
They say he had it all but there was one thing he didn’t have
He tried to take her home one night from the smoke of a local tav
Go Joey go they cried as he walk her out the door
Then a shout rang through the crowd he shouted “she’s just whore”
Joey said apologize but the guy was a drunken ass
He tried to take a swing at Joey but his fists weren’t quite as fast
Joey fired a crashing blow and the guy dropped like a rock
And Joey heard the angels sing and they told him in their song
Run Joey run they cried the law is after you
Run Joey run he ran like a scared young man will do
They cornered him in Union Town one cold October night
They say he was too tired to run, too tired to put up a fight
But Joey heard the angels sing that same old haunting song
He grabbed a gun from the sheriff’s hand
And he ran even though he was wrong
Run Joey run they cried the law is after you
Run Joey run he ran like a scared young man will do
A shot rang through the night and it tore threw a young man’s head
A crowd of people gathered round, Joey, he was dead
The news got back to his family and it cut like a jagged knife
And the whole town cried why’d two young men die the night
Joey took his own life
Run Joey run they cried the law is after you
Run Joey run he ran like a scared young man will do
Run Joey run they cried the law is after you
Run Joey run he ran but Joey’s time had come
