Wesley Alfvin - Whatever Happened to Thanksgiving?

Summertime has come and gone
And fall is finally here!
November first just arrived
My favorite time of year
The air is crisp, the nights are long
The leaves gold and red
Yet strolling through the shops in town
I can’t help but scratch my head
Twinkly lights up in the trees
And garland everywhere
A whiff of cinnamon in the breeze
And is that Santa over there?
I feel like we forgot something
Some season worth living
I wonder, as the sleigh bells ring
Whatever happened to Thanksgiving?
November first the radio plays
Christmas all day long
While I admit that Let it Snow’s
My very favorite song
I wonder if we miss that
Special spirit of November
If all we do is pass it by
And focus on December
Oh, twinkly lights up in the trees
And garland everywhere
A whiff of cinnamon in the breeze
And yes! That’s Santa over there!
I know that we forgot something
Some season worth living
I wonder, as the neighbors sing
Whatever happened to Thanksgiving?
November’s time to stop and think
Just what we’re thankful for
What brings us joy and happiness
Is what we should explore
Could it be that Christmas music
Helps us to remember
The spirit of the seasons both
December and November?
Perhaps we need that magic feeling
Earlier each year
Perhaps there're those
Who need some Christmas joy
To dry their tears
So twinkling lights, and candy canes
And carols that we sing
Can be part of what we love about
The season of Thanksgiving
Twinkly lights up in the trees
And garland everywhere
A whiff of cinnamon in the breeze
And welcome Santa! I don’t care!
I finally understand this
Joyous season we’re living
I call out as the carols ring
Have a Merry Thanksgiving!
