French DJ, rapper and producer DJ Snake – real name William Grigahcine – has been nominated for numerous Grammy awards for his eclectic mix of electronic and hip hop music.
Born and brought up just outside Paris, DJ Snake burst onto the international music scene in early 2013 with his first singles, Turn Down for What and Bird Machine. The artist – who said in a recent interview that his unusual moniker came from the nickname he was given as a result of his graffiti art, for which he was constantly ducking the police - has record producer Diplo to thank for his fame.
Los Angeles-based Diplo, well-known for the creation of electronic dancehall music group Major Lazer, selected Bird Machine to be released by his own record label, Mad Decent, and also showcased DJ Snake on his BBC Radio 1 show Diplo & Friends. Producing Lady Gaga’s Born This Way album in 2011 propelled DJ Snake into the bigtime, earning him a coveted Grammy nomination for Album of the Year in 2012. He has also worked alongside Kanye West and Duck Sauce.
Described in 2014 as ‘one to watch,’ by FoxWeekly, DJ Snake has gone from strength to strength, playing as the support act on American electronic music artist Skrillex’s 2014 Mothership Tour. DJ Snake teamed up with Diplo in the collaborative single, Lean On, which featured MØ and Major Lazer.
Over the course of his career so far, DJ Snake, has released less than ten original songs, despite telling Forbes that he “makes music almost like every day.” He explains his small number of releases, saying: “I don’t release a lot of music. I like to wait and listen to my music every day – the same records – 20 times, 50 times a day [before releasing.]”
