Irreverent electro-pop artist Ke$ha was born Kesha Rose Sebert in 1987 in Los Angeles. Growing up in Nashville Kesha spent a lot of time in recording studios with her singer-songwriter mother, Patricia Rose Sebert. Ke$ha began recording her own demos in her teens. She dropped out of school at 17 after one of her demos was picked up by record producer Dr Luke. She moved to LA to pursue her musical career.
She originally signed to Kemosabe Entertainment, owned by Dr Luke, in 2005 but soon switched to DAS Communications. Scraping by as a waitress, Kesha added the dollar sign to her name during this period as an ironic statement. In 2008, she reunited with Dr Luke and in 2009 appeared on Flo-Rida’s hit single, ‘Right Round’.
Following this mainstream exposure Ke$ha signed a multi-album deal with RCA records and her debut album ‘Animal’ was released in January 2010. The electro-pop record went straight into number one on Billboard 200. Lead single Tik-Tok enjoyed 610,000 digital downloads. It became the longest running debut number one single from a female artist since 1977.
Follow-up album, ‘Warrior’ came along in November 2012 featuring contributions from Iggy Pop and The Flaming Lips. Lead single, ‘Die Young’ became an international hit and charted at number two in the US. Catchy second single, ‘C’Mon’ went on sale in January 2013.
In 2010, she won the MTV Europe Music Award for 'Best New Act'. Ke$ha is renowned for her eccentric style, dramatic stage make-up and ‘yodelling’ vocal style. The artist is also known for her charitable work with PETA and LGBT activism.
However, Ke$ha has also suffered personal troubles in recent years which resulted in a stint in rehab in 2014, as well as a law suit against Dr Luke, her former manager.
She has listed Madonna, Led Zeppelin, Blondie and Britney Spears as influences and says her songwriting style stems from the storytelling element in country music.
