After a number of false starts, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Miguel has broken into the music scene with his funk-inspired R&B sound. Miguel Jontel Pimental was born to a Mexican father and African-American mother in 1985. Growing up in San Pedro, Los Angeles he was influenced by his mother’s love of old R&B and his father’s tastes in funk and hip-hop.
Miguel began writing his own songs at the age of 14 and by 2000 he had signed a production deal with Drop Squad and four years later signed a record deal with Black Ice. Sadly his album, ‘Young and Free’ was shelved in 2006. After signing with Jive Records, Miguel went back to the studio and created ‘All I Want is You'. However, the album’s release was delayed by three years after Black Ice sued the artist for breach of contract.
When the debut album did finally hit the shelves its lack of promotion led to poor sales and ‘All I Want is You’ hit 109 in the Billboard Top 200 chart. As Miguel supported Usher and Trey Songz on their tours, the album slowly began to climb the chart. ‘All I Want Is You’ spent 45 weeks on the chart and peaked at number 37.
Following the break-up of Jive Records, Miguel was signed to RCA. Follow-up album, ‘Kaleidoscope Dreams’ was released in 2012 and went straight in at number three in the Billboard Top 200 chart selling 71,000 copies in its first week. Lead single, ‘Adorn’ saw Miguel win the 'Best R&B Song' at the 2013 Grammy Awards.
In June 2015, Miguel released his third studio album, ‘Wildheart’ to critical acclaim.
Miguel describes his sound as ‘shocking, edgy, energizing’ and his vocal style has drawn comparisons with Prince and Marvin Gaye. The singer says that he eats an apple or a nectarine before performing to aid his voice.
