Rachel Platten was brought up in Boston, and remembers singing along to an eclectic range of tunes with her family, including The Beatles’ big hits and the music of Sam Cooke. She fell under the spell of strong female singers and songwriters as a teenager, saying in her official biography: “My CD collection was Tori Amos and Patti Griffin but then A Tribe Called Quest and Nas.”
She began dreaming of a career in the music business and, upon graduation from college, moved to New York City, found a band and began performing in clubs all over the city. Realising that she needed to do more in order to be ‘discovered’, Platten contacted coffee shops across the US, saying she would come and perform – low and behold, a nationwide tour was born. Following this success, she found a manager, Freddy Wexler, who sent her to Europe to write songs alongside other songwriters and producers.
It was thanks to this experience that she created an album and signed a recording contract with an indie music label. Her first single,
1000 Ships, was released, to moderate success. She found a new manager, Ben Singer, saying in her official biography: “Ben helped me realize that I had to start my own fire and my songs would be the sparks.”
Platten wrote the tune Fight Song, through which she was given a recording deal with Columbia Records. The song also spawned a US tour alongside Andy Grammer.
Platten says that her music inspires numerous other aspects of her life: “I’m in love with the idea of connecting people. Bringing people together is to me, the most important thing we can do in this life. I feel like that’s my mission with my music. I think that’s why I’m getting this chance right now.”
