Atlanta, Georgia native Dequantes Lamar - better known by his stage name Rich Homie Quan - is an American rapper and singer who turned his passion for music and storytelling into a successful career in rap.
Once harbouring dreams of becoming a professional baseball player, Quan found his passion for music just could not be ignored and first hit the headlines with his 2008 tune Stay Down. This song, which featured The Stack Money Boys, quickly became a favourite and fans urged Quan to release more songs. However, his promising career in music had to be put on hold for a year as he spent time in jail.
Upon his release in 2011, he met his mentor CEO Tezzy, who offered him a record deal with his own label, L.O.R (Loyalty Over Royalties). Through his work with this label, he met fellow rapper Mafio, who shared a similar musical style and outlook to Quan. They teamed up to form a group, No Sleep Gang, which was so called in tribute to their many all night music sessions. However, their first mixtape was thwarted when their mentor, Tezzy, died just a fortnight before it was due to be released.
Fast forward to 2012 and Quan had signed with Atlanta record label T.I.G (Think It’s A Game). He released the hugely popular mixtape, Still Goin In, which was critically acclaimed thanks to its honest lyrics and positive undercurrent. As Quan writes in his own biography: “I’m armed with good music and I’m here to stay.” In 2013, the Michigan State Spartans football team adopted Quan’s song, Type of Way as an anthem, proving his popularity with fans and critics alike.
