Chicago gospel star Brian Courtney Wilson began singing early in life, first as a member of the adult male chorus at the Rock of Ages Baptist Church and then as part of the black chorus at the University of Illinois. After graduating from college with a Liberal Arts and Sciences degree, he found work as a salesman and carried on his singing as a hobby. Following a move to Houston, Texas, he joined the Windsor Village United Methodist Church and announced himself to be a born-again Christian.
He began writing music for the church services and soon these songs began being played on local radio stations. Among these songs was one called Already Here, which was heard by music entrepreneur Mathew Knowles. As soon as he heard the song, he gave Wilson a recording contract with his record label Spirit Rising/Music World.
Wilson’s first album, Just Love, was released in 2009 and was produced by Stan Jones. The main song on this album, also called Just Love, was shortlisted for a Dove Award for Urban Recorded Song of the Year and Wilson was nominated as New Artist of the Year at the 41st GMA Dove Awards. He has since toured across the US with this album.
Fast forward to 2012 and Wilson released another album, entitled So Proud. The album took the top spot on the Top Gospel Albums charts, and the singles So Proud and He Still Cares were played regularly on the radio. Wilson described the song So Proud as being “about remembering … remembering the reasons why you should keep going when the days seem the hardest...remembering your value when people cast you aside...remembering the people who did not give up on you when you feel like giving up on yourself...and most of all, it's about remembering that the reason we have so much to remember is because God has always been there to make a way through the people in our lives.”
Wilson has since signed to the Motown Gospel record label and has recently released his first live album, Worth Fighting For. Recorded at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Houston, this album was produced by Motown Gospel VP of A&R Aaron Lindsey. “I love how real this album sounds. And that’s one of the things I pray for: to create a great catalogue of music that people can lean on in good—and tough—times”, Wilson said on his official biography.
