b'Mike Ward' - Rhapsody Road

Once upon a tombstone I was travelling on my own
When the road it split before me like a serpent’s flicking tongue
Beside it stood a burning bush, and tied to it a goat
And I knew I was in trouble when the vegetation spoke…

“Hello my child and welcome, I can see your path is clear
All of life’s responsibility will set you straight from here
To really know maturity, a little compromise
Guarantees respectability and comfort ’til we die…”

“Oh no my friend”, the goat declared, and now I’d seen it all!
As he patiently proceeded to explain how I would fall
“If truth be told, you never should have set off at the start
And I know you know I know that’s what you feel deep in your heart…”

“The other path I offer you leads right back to the place
Where procrastination fills your time, within its warm embrace
To never try is noble, because then you’ll never fail
And if you haven’t set off yet, then I suspect you never will…”

Don’t go for the high road, or the low road
Such a heavy load
Don’t take the less-travelled road
Cos where I wanna go
They don’t even have roads

“Well thank you both - your points are noted, minuted and filed”
I replied with newfound certainty and broke into a smile
The choices that you offer me are no choices at all
So I respectfully decline, and leave you to your curtain call…

And as I walked away, I heard the bush say to the goat
“I may not have won today but I don’t have to see you gloat”
“Relax”, the goat replied, “there’s still millions still to behold,
“And between us we’ll make sure they never look beyond the road…”

Don’t go for the high road, or the low road
Such a heavy load
Don’t take the less travelled road
Because where I’m going
They don’t even have roads
