The High Desert Playboys - That River

We made all our walls a bit higher,
and thought that our work would be done.
Started working for a living, and dying for nothing
until all of our money was gone

Celebrations would last until morning,
then the men they would sleep for the sun.
They told all their stories, and they dangled their lies,
till all of their whiskey was gone.

Then the watchmen said the river was coming,
and the men stood and said what they said.
They got all their things, their pictures and rings,
cause that river has risen again

Still the chosen ones stare at their shining,
and know they can never be wrong
But the rest of still livin, with a bit too much vision
would pretend not to see what's to come.

Then one day the river subsided,
and she left behind much to be done
we know were all sands, rain in yesterday's hands,
and we all know that river will come

And the men they would all run in circles
like goldfish who don't have a plan
they're taking their things, their pictures and rings
cause that river has risen again
cause that river has risen again
