The Academy Blues Project - Witch Hat

She smelled like Florida water and potpourri
With just a hint of four thieves vinegar
She stroked her amulet and clutched her gris gris
As she chanted aloud from her grimoire
Now the rat king dances in the parlor
The candelabra dwindles low
And Anastasia calls on John the Conqueror
Then says a prayer to Madame Laveau
With every new face this woman reveals
I lose another little piece of my mind
Still she always keeps me wand’rin’
Which hat… she gonna wear… this time
How could I have missed it
That voodoo/hoodoo lurking in those eyes
Now she has me trapped in this Sisyphean struggle
To climb her endless mountain of lies
Well, she’s “awful, pompous
And artificial”
But even Medusa, the hideous Gorgon
Started life as a beautiful girl
With every new face this woman reveals
I lose another little piece of my mind
Still she always keeps me wand’rin’
Which hat… she gonna wear… this time
So she fixed me up a potion
Of honey, sulfur, and jimsonweed
If I could not sidestep the fetish of her sympathetic magic
I knew I would ultimately burn in effigy
Outside her window, a murder of crows gathered
By the cemetery gate
As I gazed upon that marble orchard
I plotted my escape
With every new face this woman reveals
She takes another little piece of my mind
Still she always keeps me wand’rin’
Which hat… she gonna wear… this time
