Charlie Woods & Deep Hollow - Progress and Change

My grandpa was a carman on the C&O lines
He worked there forty years until they made him retire
And I remember him telling me the times would get tough
But I never knew what he meant until I grew up
As a child down along the railroad track I’d play
Watching hundred cuts of coal roll down the line all day
And now I walk along the same old rail not a drop of coal I see
But an empty yard closed down shop and broom sage to my knees
And now the mines are all covered and the coke plant went under
The railroad ain't running many trains
The jobs here are drying and the steel mills dying
Many families lost a good paying wage
How I long to seen the time when our boom towns were in their prime
When a man could find work and good pay
But our life blood they took away to make the world a cleaner place
And they told us it was progress and change
I’m one of the few left to still work the rail
And it breaks my heart to see the whole yard so stale
My hometown once had the world’s largest yard
Now its two miles long with empty tracks and freight cars
And now the mines are all covered and the coke plant went under
The railroad ain't running many trains
The jobs here are drying and the steel mills dying
Many families lost a good paying wage
How I long to seen the time when our boom towns were in their prime
When a man could find work and good pay
But our life blood they took away to make the world a cleaner place
And they told us it was progress and change
My daddy’s side were railroad men and mamas dug coal
It wasn’t the best work but it’s all that they’d known
And I know I’m a blessed man to follow their tracks
But often time I wonder how long it’ll last
Now that the mines are all covered and the coke plant went under
The railroad ain't running many trains
The jobs here are drying and the steel mills dying
Many families lost a good paying wage
How I long to seen the time when our boom towns were in their prime
When a man could find work and good pay
But our life blood they took away to make the world a cleaner place
And they told us it was progress and change
Yeah our life blood they took away to make the world a cleaner place
And they told us it was progress and change
