Black Hulled Ships - An Old Tree

I saw an old tree by the college path
Where the vines had all grown round
At the old trees base grew a thicket
Of tangled thorns with savage spines
Savage spines
A song bird silent on the lonely perch
Made not a sound that I could hear
Perhaps too blasted by the wind and rain
Perhaps did I approach too near
Where branches once reached up into the sky
Years of decay had cut them short
Where the old beech bark was once smooth and grey
Now peeled and cracked, fallen away
Fallen away
A song bird silent on the lonely perch
Made not a sound that I could hear
Perhaps too blasted by the wind and rain
Perhaps did I approach too near
