Fans of Blink-182 looking for any opportunity to reminisce in its iconic music will be interested to know that Mark Hoppus has unveiled his original, handwritten lyrics for I Miss You.
Known for its high-energy live shows and irreverent lyrical toilet humour, Blink-182 made sure it was never forgotten. And now with this new find, we can take a stroll down memory lane, and have a chance to emo-out to I Miss You.
The second single from the band's untitled fifth studio album, the track entered the national Top 10 hits on the UK Singles Chart upon its release and took the number one position on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart. The song was also given gold certification for selling over 500,000 copies. It was a track that brought Blink-182 to the forefront of the industry and our hearts.
Breaking new ground, the track set Blink-182 apart as a band with serious value and more than just running naked through Los Angeles. I Miss You provided the band with meaningful territory and utilised jazz brushes, upright bass, and a cello.
The technique used to write the lyrics of the song was also a new one with both Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus writing their respective parts separately after agreeing on the theme of the song.
So now that the original lyrics have been revealed by Hoppus, it is interesting to see what the song may have looked like.
Looking through the lyric sheets, we can easily pinpoint lyrics that never made it to the final version:
“Please save me destroy me, I’m barely here.
“All the signals you sent are getting lost in transmission.
“I believed what you said, that’s why I’m like this.”
The lyric sheets also included portions of the band’s lead single Feeling This.
A great contributor to the development of pop punk, Blink-182’s music combined pop with fast-paced punk rock, which produced attractive tracks that appealed to the masses.
