Lynda Dobbin-Turner - Holland

When you're going to have a baby
It's like you've planned your greatest trip
You've got your language dictionary
And a pocket full of tips
You've got your maps
And you've picked out the sights
You're so longing to see
Then you buy your ticket
And you board the plane
And you're off to Italy
But when you reach your destination
And that plane's about to land
The attendant says enjoy your stay
Welcome to Holland
Your heart climbs up into your throat
Fear drowns you like a sinking boat
But you're here now
And it's here that you must stay
But in your heart you hear
A small voice say
I don't want to be here
Can't they understand
I was off to see the sights of Rome
Now here I'm in Holland
Oh, I don't want to be here
Can't somebody see
This was not my destination
No, I was bound for Italy
But with time you start to settle in
You start to find your way around
You begin to learn the language
Meet folks you never would have found
And you realize it's not awful
You're just in a different place
And the pain can all but disappear
Looking in your baby's face
But sometimes late at night
After another long hard day
Though you hate yourself for feeling it
You can hear that small voice say
I don't want to be here
Can't they understand
I was off to see the sights of Rome
Now here I'm in Holland
Oh, I don't want to be here
Can't somebody see
This is not my destination
No, I was bound for Italy
And for all your life you're gonna feel the pain
Of what you didn't get to do
As all your friends share their excitement
You'll say yes, I dreamed that too
But if you lose yourself in what might have been
You are never going to see
Though it's a slower, different pace of life
Holland has its own beauty
Though you didn't want to be here
You come to understand
That Holland has its windmills
And Holland has Rembrandts,
And Holland has tulips
And you will finally see
This was not your destination
But it is where you're meant to be
And it all makes sense somehow
When my baby smiles at me
