The Notorious Rio - Coming from My Soul

You know they like to continue to make fun of our culture and our people you know? The food we eat, the music we make and the slang we speak you feel me? Not really understanding the pain and suffering we go through as a people you know? Got to believe in the music...

Cause when it's on then it's on at least you know that it's coming from my soul....

This world don't understand my conception, my truest message
Of what I'm stressing that the ghetto is neglected
How many bodies of our flesh to get lost?
Before we realize we're losing the fight that Malcolm X Lost
Living in this drought I could see all the dissipated dreams
Of our young black children being all they could be
So when I stop and make it sing for Martin King
You know that it's coming from my soul
We were poor and broke but felt rich when it was food on the table
Mommy doing good when she was young and fully able
To be stable through these hard times, cause it was hard with my daddy playing the part time
How can I blame myself I was a victim of the streets
Just hanging with the thugs just to find that missing inner piece
The way we made heat, we used a lighter it was flaming up the stove
And that's what we mean, when it's coming from your soul

Cause I was born and raised to be a victim of these streets
I walked a thousand miles until I couldn't feel my feet
And I was torn and crazed to this system that we see
I walked a thousand miles and yet I still don't see no peace
And we were warned for days there be no rhythm to the beat
I walked a thousand miles and yet It's still no where to eat
Cause when it's on then it's on at least you know that's it's coming from
My soul

I've been busy on the scene been missing all my family
Nostalgic mind has got me thinking of our tragedies
How can it be so intact, the way our black families are destroyed
From liquors stores and selling crack
Tell me what's it for? I'm writing lyrics to keep us in control
The hope they have stole
So many fathers never known cause the ghetto never resting it's bones
Cause when it's on then it's and you know
The school books are old raggedy and they're part run
Education probes a mystery, nowhere for us to start from
Corruption in the city it's injected to these streets
Compassion shows no pity they're connected to the beast
To say the least you know I'm giving a damn
I took a bottle to the face from my own grown blood and fam
It put me in place to keep my guards up
Knowing that our troubles are within, the struggle never really ends

Cause I was born and raised to be a victim of these streets
I walked a thousand miles until I couldn't feel my feet
And I was torn and crazed to this system that we see
I walked a thousand miles and yet I still don't see no peace
And we were warned for days there be no rhythm to the beat
I walked a thousand miles and yet It's still no place to eat
Cause when it's on then it's on at least you know that's it's coming from
My soul...

From Education to the politics our people weigh's our tolerance
So low and behold his providence, losing control cause all I wanted
Was a chance to speak but yet the devil has a plan to keep the wiser man
From speech
I can't influence with these bids dealing bids
It's like we're trapped in the system with these kids killing kids
I write a song to try to reach them but it is what it is cause when it's on
Then it's on and you know?
We need to be stronger and think about the lives at stake
Especially in this time and place, We must survive the race
It makes it harder looking further through this slumber
Our son's in need of fathers our daughters need their mothers
For me to be your brother my stories are told
Just to remind you of the life that we survived through the tough & cold
The way we washed up, we used water it was boiling from the stove
And that's what we mean, when it's coming from your soul

This one right here goes out to that little girl catching the CTA bus on her way to school on a Monday morning. Go ahead and smile little girl, things are going to get better, yeah....

This is that shit right here dawg, yeah cause when it's on then it's on at least you know that it's coming from my soul....
