Dennis Lee Nowicki - James Monroe (A Life)

April 28th, 1758
James Monroe was born on a Virginia estate
His parents death filled young James with mounting concern, then
His uncle brought him to William and Mary to learn
He dropped out in '76 to fight the British who came
At the battle of Trenton, James was nearly killed but gained fame

He returned to William and Mary, got his law degree
He wed Elizabeth in '86 in New York City
They had three children, one died young, and struggled with debt
James entered politics, was in the U.S. Senate
Governor of Virginia, joined the Minister to France
Where he helped with the Louisiana Purchase expanse

James Monroe, he helped freedom survive
Patriot, statesman, and President number five

In 1816, James ran, the presidency he'd gain
A riff was solved when he bought Florida from Spain
In the Panic of '19, the economy declined
The Missouri Compromise so they could have slaves, He signed
In '20, James ran unopposed, got a second term
His focus, now his Monroe Doctrine he affirmed

It said with Latin America, Europe not to intervene
and the U.S. would stay out of Europe's troubles, by all means
James retired in '25, in '30, his wife passed
On July four, 1831, one breath was his last
James Monroe, fought for America's freedom on the field
He continued fighting for all the Americas, without yield
