Dennis Lee Nowicki - Millard Fillmore (A Life)
Millard Fillmore was born
On a cold Tuesday morn
The 7th of January, 1800
Got no schooling, was poor
But learned to be a lawyer
At 23, opened his practice, moved ahead
In '26, decided
Abigail, he'd wed
They would have two children, Millard and Mary
Was elected to be
A rep in '33
Eight years, warmed a legislative seat in DC
Millard
The 13th President was he
Fillmore
1850 to '53
Taylor asked him to be
In '49, his VP
But, in July 1850, Zachary died
Now Prez, he elevates
A compromise between states
Though, returning escaped slaves, some wouldn't abide
To Japan, He sent Perry
Gunboat Diplomacy
California and Utah joined as free states
And although, Millard tried
His reelection bid died
In March, '53, Pierce entered the White House gates
Millard
The 13th President was he
Fillmore
1850 to '53
Sadly, Millard, downcast
His wife and daughter passed
Then in '58, Caroline, he married
In the war, some were surprised
With the South, he sympathized
He lost respect, and a grudge many would carry
March 8th of '74
Millard would speak no more
He was buried near his home in Buffalo
His legacy, sad to see
Was misjudgment, for he
Could not placate nor take command within his role
