The Alaskas - In the Band Again

When the maple leaves fall down
The boys in uniform
Come onto the field (and out the gate)
To play their silly games and
On the stand awaits a marching band
Who will drum our ears along
While pretty girls cheer (at the parade)
As they play every autumn saturday
Only in a memory
The American tragedy
To ride it on through until high school ends
Then never to play in the band again
So I got a guitar
To write little songs (about the days)
But nothing you can sing can bring them back (up and away)
And what was once a world you'd see and feel
Lives as a dried and trampled field
Under overhead lights (inside the mind)
Time ticks forward passing by
And all you write gets left behind
Try to reach back but there is no key
To the lock of that door
It's stuck inside a memory
To see the ghost but nothing more
You'll be marching along 'til the drum solo ends
Then never to play in the band again
