Emerald's Diner - Episode 15: Beer Store

I was never that close with my father
It wasn't that he wasn't good at it or
That he wasn't there
We just didn't connect well
As time went on and distance came in,
It got harder and harder
But I still longed for more
I had always dreamed
Of sharing a beer with my dad
But he quit drinking
Before I turned 21
So whenever I go to the beer store
I come back with beer for me
And a non-alcoholic one for him
That I'll put in the fridge
Whenever I visit his home
While we don't normally share one together
Mainly because I don't have the words to or the courage to ask
When I return,
His beer is gone
And I had mine, back at my own home
So my dream may not come true
But in a way
It is still like we shared a beer
And at least a connection
No matter how small,
Was made
And I'll go back to the beer store
Whenever I come to visit
Even if I don't need a drink myself
