Pemberton Roach - The First Day

Late July, Roanoke summer
Blue Ridge Mountain cicadas humming
Muddy old farm pond full of frogs
Copperhead sunning on a sycamore log
Me and my cousins out in the pool
Floating on John Deere inner tubes
Horseflies chomping, big as a crow
Dirt Bikes buzzing up by the road
I still see it clear as day
Hanging up there like a big oil painting
All bright colors in my mind
Funny how you just know sometimes
It don't matter how you met
Or where you might end up
You ain't never gonna forget
The first day that you fell in love
Heard them all coming over the creek
Loose pine board on the bridge kept squeaking
We ran out for a kiss and a hug
Bobby showed off his brand new truck
Grandma brought her bucket of beans
And a tub of that famous peach ice cream
Granddaddy pulled out his church violin
That was the moment she walked in
I still hear him clear as day
Scrubbing that fiddle like an orchestra playing
Every note burned in my mind
Funny how you just know sometimes
It don't matter how you met
Or where you might end up
You ain't never gonna forget
The first day that you fell in love
She was a teenage queen
And I was some dumb kid
I knew it couldn't happen
But lying here at night
I still wish it did
Years flew by like they do
She got married and I did too
And so did old Bobby, so I flew in
Good to see the whole crew again
Found my table, ordered iced tea
She sat right down next to me
We caught up and she moved on
Took my heart but left this song
I still see it clear as day
Hanging up there like a big oil painting
All bright colors in my mind
Funny how you just know sometimes
It don't matter how you met
Or where you might end up
You ain't never gonna forget
The first day that you fell in love
The first day that you fell in love
