Original Cast of OZ: A New Musical - Not There (Brain)

I’VE SPENT MY WHOLE LIFETIME
FEELING NOT QUITE WHOLE.
IT’S ONLY BEEN TWO DAYS,
BUT IT’S BORING ON THIS POLE.

Not now. I’m trying to concentrate.
HANGING AROUND
I’M GLAD YOU FOUND ME.
HOPE YOU’LL STAY.
I’VE SO MUCH TO SAY,
AND NO ONE’S BEEN THERE.
THE CROWS DON’T CARE.

I think you’re supposed to scare the crows and not have conversations with them.
I know.

Now that’s enough out of you. I’m trying to write something that doesn’t concern you.
THEY EAT THE CORN.
THAT’S WHY I WAS BORN
TO KEEP THEM AT BAY.

A FARMER TOOK HIS OLD CLOTHES
AND STUFFED ME WITH FRESH HAY,
PAINTED TWO EYES
OF DIFFERENT SIZE,

BOTH SEE THE SAME WAY.

THOSE INCOMING BIRDS BETTER BEWARE.
THEY JUST STARE.
ALTHOUGH I’VE BEEN RIGHT ON THE FENCE,
I KNOW MY LIFE DOESN’T QUITE MAKE SENSE.
THE CROWS ALL LAUGH AT MY EXPENSE,
‘CAUSE I HAVEN’T A BRAIN,
JUST STRAW AND GRAIN.
I KNOW I’M QUITE LUCKY.
I COULD BE A STRAW BALE.

THE FARMER DID A NICE JOB,
BUT I NEED ONE MORE DETAIL.
THIS YEARNING FOR NEW LEARNING
COULD USE SOME HARDWARE,

AND I DECLARE
NOTHING’S THERE.
MY HEAD’S BARE.
Now THAT’S what I call a book. Whoever wrote it must have lots of brains.
Indeed she did.
ALTHOUGH
ALTHOUGH
I’VE BEEN RIGHT ON THE FENCE,
I KNOW
I KNOW
MYLIFE DOESN’T QUITE MAKE SENSE.
THE CROWS ALL LAUGH
AT MY EXPENSE,
‘CAUSE I HAVEN’T A BRAIN,
JUST STRAW AND GRAIN.
I KNOW I’M QUITE LUCKY.
COULD BE A STRAW BALE.
THE FARMER DID A NICE JOB,
BUT I NEED ONE MORE DETAIL.
THIS YEARNING FOR NEW LEARNING
COULD USE SOME HARDWARE,
AND I DECLARE
NOTHING’S THERE
MY HEAD’S BARE.
NOT MUCH
THERE.
