Terry Pearson - Overflow

I must admit I'm scared of leaving, but I feel like I've been growing strong
There ain't no arguing that road is lonely, and I pray not long
Throw one more log onto the fire, then I'll be gone

I emptied out that old brown suitcase of all the memories down through the years
You'll want some pictures of smiling babies. They'll bring you tears
And I found that one you wrote on the back of, and you called me "Dear"

We started out well enough
That was so long ago
So much water 'neath the bridge
It was bound to overflow
There's no gathering up those angry words
That struck like thunderbolts
No calling back like hunting dogs
Those awful words we spoke

The only rule was 'stay together'. They say that all's fair in love and war
We could not foresee the consequences of those slamming doors
And parting words now would just be pointless. We said them all before

We've got to find our independence. I breathe in, you breathe out
We shared one life, but that just can't be what love's about
It's a waste of time to love when the heart's been hollowed out

We started out well enough
That was so long ago
So much water 'neath the bridge
It was bound to overflow
There's no gathering up those angry words
That struck like thunderbolts
No calling back like hunting dogs
Those awful words we spoke
