Soft & Sweet - Get Better

Well, Kate says
"You can't stay here all night
You've gotta live your life
I promise I'll be fine"
But I should trust my gut
Because I know how things get here
How when he comes home
I hear her voice shake with fear

I never wanted to picture her that way
I knew my heart would break, but it was something I had to face
I watched her makeup mask all of her purple bruises
But no excuses
And no one wants to ask

"It's just an attempt to get better, that's all."

She cut her hands trying to clean the glass
And looking at her shattered mirror, she wondered how long this would last
But as his fists went flying, she called out for her sister
He grabbed her hair, and in one clean cut with a pair of scissors
He screamed out "Mikey! It's time to stop playing pretend
I don't care what you think, my son was born a man!"
But as her tears fell down, he felt a sense of regret
Well, he brushed it off and grabbed his liquor, and went to bed

"It's just an attempt to get better, that's all"

"Come stay with me! If only for tonight
We can stay up late, using jars with fireflies!"
But my words fell short, 'cause she's already in her head
I can't say I blame her, waiting for this nightmare to finally end
At six AM, she called me from a friend's phone
She said "I made a mistake, I shouldn't be left alone"
It was her first attempt, or the first that she let me know about
I drove to her house and cleaned her up, she let her feelings out

"It's just an attempt to get better, that's all"

"Baby, shut the door, you know I've heard this all before
See, you're just waiting for someone to pick you off of the ground
And if you'd come inside and stay the night, I swear that everything will work out fine!
Things are as simple as you want them to be"

"Well, I can't even reach the door, let alone pick myself off of the floor
You see, I'm just a 'no one' who's trying to bring you down
And if I came inside and stayed the night, I'd still have these thoughts stuck in my mind
Things aren't as simple as you want them to be
They're not as simple as you want them to be"
