Yaki Margulies - The Songwriter

Well, there’s a pretty small town on the flats of North Dakota
With a pretty small bar where everybody plays
There’s not a lot of music makers often on the bill
But then there’s not a lot of people living out that way
There’s Ed Rasmussen who plays a decent guitar
He tries to sound like B.B. King or maybe Johnny Marr
And then there’s Mary Ellen who sings like the moon
Her voice is slightly thin but it’s gentle as a loon
There’s Isadore Kopp who tickles the keys
His hands fly up and down while people drum on their knees
And then there’s me, and everybody wants to know
What do I bring to the table when I play at all these shows?
I’m the songwriter, I don’t sing so well
My musicianship is sloppy as everyone can tell
But I can write a song that would make the devil proud
I want to make the people sing, I want to make them get loud
I work at the only pharmacy in town
And during pheasant season, I show tourists around
But most every weekend, when it starts to get dark
I go and play my songs at the live music bar
I want to move to LA and sign a record deal
And tour through all the cities while living on some wheels
But my mama says my talents are not too strong
That nobody wants to hear me stumble through a song
I’m the songwriter, I don’t sing so well
My musicianship is sloppy as everyone can tell
But I can write a song that will make them tap their toes
And the heart will surely follow where the ears want to go
Well, I played in several towns and tried to gain a steady following
I moved several times, and started working in a cannery
I never got a band, but I did get a family
And though I never cut that record, I did just sign a lease
I’m the songwriter, I don’t sing so well
My musicianship is sloppy as everyone can tell
But I can write a song that could make a mother sigh
And I can play it to myself when it’s late in the night
I can play it to myself when it’s late in the night
