Yellow Bird - Gypsy Moth

My mother was born as a gypsy moth
My father was born as a man
My sister was born as a tiger shark
And I was born as a lamb

My mother waited for weekends
My father waited for 4 pm
My sister waited for the sun to go down
I waited for time not to pass

Birthdays and deathdays and parties
Dancing alone in the yard
Dreamt up a brother who'd push me on swings
With a delicate arm

Made up the words before I learned how to read
Took it all over
Let the ship sail away, let it rush

Go write your teacher a letter
You know the one
Tell them "thank you for steering"
When you couldn't trust the auto

Picture them reading it in your voice
Say "before you go and diminish yourself
Hold on"
