Azoudis - Dreamer

Anna was a girl just 12 years old
With mamma in a town of death untold
Looking north for a place to be
So mama asked for the help of a coyote
Coyote took their things and raped her mom
Walking fifteen miles in the dead of night
Nothing to eat
Lost the nails on their feet
Made their way to el paradero
They crossed the border at presidio
Watchin’ out for la migra
They’ll take your kids if they getcha
Dreamer keep your dreams alive
Dreamer keep your dreams alive
At the Rio Grande, the water was cold
The current pulled at em’ and it wouldn’t let go
Anna struggled but made it
Mama floated away, and never came back
Nobody left, she’s all alone
Just a picture in her pocket of all that she’s known
At night she sees her face
and thoughts she can’t erase
And then she met Jose
He was sixteen and crossed alone
Lost his parents long ago
Has a cousin in New Mexico
He took Anna under his wing
He taught her how to smile and taught her how to sing
Wasn’t long before, they’d stick with each other forever more
Dreamer keep your dreams alive
Dreamer keep your dreams alive
He got a job working construction
She got a job at a motel
Rented a small room in Bernalillo
Things were going OK
They’ve got no papers, no education
Living from one day to the next
They’re working for the gueros, not saying much
Keep your head down, earn their respect
Ten years on they’ve got two babies
Two girls born in the USA
Hoping one day they’ll amount to something
No running from la migra, a place to stay
When she looks in their eyes they remind her of her mama
And all that passed and that could have been
But at least they’re not hungry, not being abused
A chance for a future, a chance to live
One morning Jose was off to work
Got stopped by the highway patrol
No papers, no visa, Jose was sent to prison
Deported to Honduras family ripped apart
Sometimes dreams they don’t come true
Sometimes dreams they mislead you
If one guy has a heart of gold
There’s another who’s got no fuckin’ soul
Jose can’t see his girls no more
We’ve heard this tale a thousand times before
Anna looks twice her age
She’s earning less than a minimum wage
Dreamer keep your dreams alive
Stay the fight and you’ll survive
Dreamer they know who you are
They’ll snatch you up and send you far
Oh no but Dreamer don’t you dream too high
They’ll crush your dreams leave you to die
