Eric Jerome Brodberg - Our Family Tree

When I get to thinking
It's just my thoughts and me
I sit out on the back porch
And look at our family tree
It's that big old oak
That's kept growing through the years
Generations of family
Since it was planted there

We always have a good time
When we all get together
Everyone out in the yard
It just can't get much better
All the laughs and carrying on
Outside around that tree
Food and fun and gossip
Is such a sight to see

In the dog days of the summer
Through the winter's cold and snow
So many stories there to hear
From people that you know
The colors in the autumn
To the blossoms in the spring
Nothing much can take away
The love of our family tree

In autumn, every leaf that falls
Has a story of its own
Of loved ones here and loved ones gone
And those I've never known
As I hear the stories
Of family now and past
I realize with all my heart
This tree will always last

In the dog days of the summer
Through the winter's cold and snow
So many stories there to hear
From people that you know
The colors in the autumn
To the blossoms in the spring
Nothing much can take away
The love of our family tree

I see a new branch growing
Between my wife and me
A newborn due within the month
For all the world to see

In the dog days of the summer
Through the winter's cold and snow
So many stories there to hear
From people that you know
The colors in the autumn
To the blossoms in the spring
Nothing much can take away
The love of our family tree
