Darryl Atherton - Passchendaele

We recount and remember
One hundred years of hurt
The many thousands lost
Swallowed by the Passchendaele dirt

Whether BEF Empire or Hun
Little chance against automatic gun
Now it's back to Wipers Times and some
Dug in just like The Somme and Verdun

Those in fourteen wanting to fight so badly
Through Generals that's what they got sadly
A chance to tour the world hardly
A chance to go home taken so gladly

Trench Foot pneumonia part of the daily slog
The incessant rain turns the Salient into a bog
Treacherous landscape unsafe for man horse or dog
Flooded trenches recorded in the Battalion Log

After months of sheer pain
Must never let it happen again
For the fallen masses that were slain
Peace the ultimate tribute to gain

Conflict and destruction domain of human race
Wipe everything of the planet without a trace
A need for compassion and good grace
Gives us a chance for a new light and beautiful face
