David Sutton - Train Going Nowhere

On a cold winters night I did journey alone on a train that was travelling nowhere
When to my great surprise the door burst open wide
Twas a maiden with tears in her eyes
Her suitcase beside her we talked for a while
Through the pain in her eyes was no hint of a smile
And she turned to me there in the gathering gloom said we all now had something to pay

Twas a knock at the door and a figure came through
With a hat that was black and a cape on
He'd a cane like a snake and the temperature fell
As he told us of where he had been
He laughed as he spoke, he'd a mouth like a cave
And I felt like he'd crawled up from out of the grave
The train hit a tunnel the lights they did fade
As we sped through the night going nowhere

I awoke with a start at the breaking of dawn when the first rays of sun pierced my eyelids
I was battered and sore I was cold and confused with a deepening sense of unease
There was nobody with me I saw with a start
And the pain it just hit me right there in my heart
Just a battered old suitcase that lay on the floor and the echoing sound of his laughter
