Jan Thompson - Across the Moor

Across The Moor
Was the day she always made her way
Cross the Moor, to where here love did stay
Took no heed of words her mother told
Of the mist and the cold
Left the fire that burned inside the hearth
Found her cloak and walked the garden path
She was watched from where her mother sat
Who will pray she'll come back
Though cold, the winter sun still high and present in in sky
Couldn't see a sign of any change before her journey ends
And her steps soon took far across
The heath with grass beneath
Her feet that knew each blade
She'd walked this way so many times
Before she knows she finds herself outside his door
Cross the heath, cross the moor
She did find her love was not alone
But another sat inside his home
What she saw made her heart break in two
Now she knew, the rumours to be true
She turned to make the journey cross the lonely moor, so lost
With thoughts of how she'd make it back before the sky turned black
If only she had taken heed, not listened to the need
Inside her heart so deep
And soon the mist was all around, no sign of any ground
Like floating on the air
Till she falls, no one to hear her call
