Coffeesmoke - Wisemen Sighed in the Hush of Dawn

A child of joy skipped by my window with a ribbon in her hair
Laughing, singing, shouting come what may
And I couldn't help but wonder if she'd pass again that evening
As I paused to hide a cherished dream away
The leaves were turning, candles burning
Evening's hours whistling down the wind
As I prepared to light the tearstained fires of flight
I saw her pass the window once again
Smiling, but not laughing
Hopeful, not quite as sure

A child of hope passed by my window with a teardrop in her eye
Still smiling, but hiding the shadow of despair
And I couldn't help but wonder if she'd pass again that evening
As I paused to chase a whisper down the stair
The sun was fading, clowns parading
Blood and greasepaint glistening in the street
As I prepared to mourn the lives of puppets born
I saw her pass again on silent feet
Worried, not as fearless
Shaken, but not destroyed

And I stepped into the night
And I weighed both black and white
And I begged them and at first, I thought they heard
Then they climbed down from their cloud
And we stood there in the crowd
And we listened, but no one said a word
