Ephemeral Ballads - Life's Melancholy

A misty winter morning, snowflakes glisten across the sky
Embracing where they fall and crashing right into the ground
A city clad in stone, the walls are stronger than they seem
And standing over them, a house that's bigger than them all
A wealthy family with three children soon all grew apart

We grew up in a small house, as father had to work so long
And as he dug for coal, one day he could not believe his luck
He struck a gold vein and he brought it home to us
From that day further we just kept on climbing
Mother had him work to get more gold so that we could live in happiness!
What a life that we have been given!
These joyous times are ours to cherish
And we never want to give it up!
To stay like this forever more if we can!

Mother worked so hard to pay the bills, our home and possessions were taken away
We moved back into our tiny place that could not house our former egos
We would argue 'bout some silly things, and that became a usual thing to do
Brother Edwin did not say a thing, for he fell into some strange disease

We fell apart as time went by
I could not see how he fell deeper into the dark

As life crumbled we grew further from each other until the walls fell down
This was all just too much for Mother as her heart began to strain, from the stress, from the pain, and then she died with no goodbye, goodbye!

With no food for us to live on, we would steal anything that we could find
One day, Edwin started writing notes, ones that felt deeper than anything
They caught the attention of strangers and sold for just enough to pay for food
Over time the hard work paid off, for the fame, grew and grew, and he became a renowned poet!

Enveloped in pain, this heart beats for you
It's ripped from my chest and then poured onto this page
Even now that time has gone by, how long can a candle light burn?
