Abbey Hoffman - Heartbeat

We watched the earth freeze
Every single detail
We searched all afternoon for signs of life
Even the weeping willows stopped their crying
Our footprints cracked the creme brûlée
If there had been wind it would have swung the evergreen chandeliers like chimes
But all was calm and quiet that day

Then we saw a tiny tree
Right next to where the baseball diamond used to be
And this became our only hope
As you pointed for me to look
Water trickling between the bark and ice
Clear skin reveals the blood beneath
If only we could find
A heartbeat
