Darryl Atherton - Coal Was King

It's sad to see a town that's stagnating
When once it was strong and bustling
Witnessing the steady decline is frustrating
Gone is the time when coal was king

The catalyst of hope for more than a century
Now seems little more than a fleeting memory
When coal powered the country it was needed in a hurry
Now there's nothing not even the slurry

I remember those heady days of the sixties
Before the rot set in during the seventies
The mines have gone demolished in the eighties
All we are left with are the many memories

The skyline different now forever changing
Those with a dynamic future always leaving
All that's left are precious memories worth saving
A remembrance of the time when coal was king
