Darryl Atherton - The Opposite Six

6 pm the evening starts leaning on one end of the bar
Starting to wonder how my life has come this far
Hammond organ plays the background theme to the night
Now was the cue to orchestrate the score of taking flight

The night drew on along with your growing identity crisis
It seemed the whole of the bar just delved into your business
I came along to watch and support your conquistador
And saw how they were a hard crowd to their paramour

Martin you had set out to achieve all that is a must
But soon it came crashing down to nothing more than dust
The evening's event flashed by like a disco to my eyes
I had to leave I couldn't face your disillusioned cries

I stepped out into the first light as the wind blew a can
Surrounded by the empty streets just one dog and his man
Too late to go home too early for work this dawning day
Not sure what I had just witnessed just knew I couldn't stay

6 am and the day refuses to fully dawn overhead
Dark heavy clouds roll by looking like lead
Filled with rain that scudding sky of lead
Pangs of hunger creep in it's time to be fed

Sat in Samuels looking through the window pane
Umbrellas and cases going to the station and back again
Now people are starting scurrying across the square
Like robot ants going here there and now everywhere

The opposite six much has changed in those hours
You started out so bright now wilted like week old flowers
You're thinking of some remote archipelago to flee
Best get moving it's the only haven I can see

In the opposite six much can change
Be it weird violent or just plain strange

The opposite six
