Iambic Beats - Ocean

Water laps at the sand
I recognize a longing unanswered
Ocean calms when the moon draws near
Like a fevered patient given cool cloths
She wears silver trinkets like pearls
Basking seductively in the moon's intentional gaze

Tomorrow and again the moon will be gone
Ocean will reach and fall, lose shape
Turn inward on herself and become her own tears

I understand her dance
The emptiness of negative space
The necessary zero that gives the one meaning
The water knows this better than I
Wearing gilded crowns or darkness
As though either were normal

As I step into her shallows
I, too, am awash in an anguish
For all the ages
The kind one treasures for its rarity
Holds to her breasts to keep always

For to long thusly is to know a depth of love
That even in abstentia illuminates

The moon nestles between my rib bones and the water
I walk into the frigid depths
Until longing joins hands with satiety

The zeros meld into the ones
Light becomes dark
My lips are a winding shoreline
My voice, a current
And I sing the ocean's song
