Jim Skiff - Hylas/A Vision

Hylas chant for me
Delicate prayers of the spring
Trilling their praise at the water's green edge
Seated in temples of cattail and sedge
Murmuring mantras of spring
Hylas chant for me

Hylas sing for me
Delicate songs of the spring
Raising their voice in the moist tepid air
Filling the marsh with a music so rare
Melodious minstrels of spring
Hylas sing for me

Hylas speak for me
Delicate poems of the spring
Reciting their sonnets around the dark pool
Keeping a cadence so seamless and smooth
Eloquent bards of the spring
Hylas speak for me

While dreaming in an arbor 'mid the pines
I felt a gentle hand caress my face
And softly touch my brow as though to trace
And memorize my features sleeping lines
I had not fully wakened from my dream
To find that gentle hand clapsed firm in mine
And rising in a swift ascending line
We climbed above the tops of wind tossed trees

I looked to see what being held my hand
But only glimpsed a shifting shimmering gleam
As the sun illumes a pebble strewn stream
Or breaks dappled where the quivering birches stand

Below me now, the planet stood revealed
A soft, effusive glow did light the land
The Presence led me then to understand
All earthly pain and sorrow had been healed

I looked to see what being held my hand
But only glimpsed a shifting, shimmering gleam
As the sun illumes a pebble strewn stream
Or breaks dappled where the quivering birches stand

Awareness now returned to where I lay
Beneath the silent canopy of pine
The Being's gentle hand still warm in mine
Left me certain that my vision
Was for today

I looked to see what being held my hand
But only glimpsed a shifting shimmering gleam
As the sun illumes a pebble strewn stream
Or breaks dappled where the quivering birches stand
