Joseph Stay - 227

2/27: I awoke well past the dawn
Quickly fading dreams in my head
I scanned the world updates
Wondering what's been going on
8.8 quake, over 100 dead
And bound to get bigger
Bound to make the records
Bound to create tsunamis in the west

Horrified, I scanned the words
As I called my mother down
Concepcion in ruins as we stared
The pictures had reached the gossip chain
And I admit to looking on
Wondering if I should be scared
But you know I was concerned
As the fires of science burned
In two more hours, the gods would strike again

I could only pray the doubt would wash away
The moment all my neighbors heard the news
Then we could be informed
South America wasn't warned
California, put on your running shoes

When I heard of Okinawa, I wondered (to put it tame)
Two devastating earthquakes in less than half a day
I thought to all my brothers
And my future friends by name
I was told I'd go to Santiago someday
I almost hope I do
For to help rebuild the schools
And re-establish order in the streets

And Hawaii might be hit, French Polynesia was
Each side of the Pacific is folding in
Like a picnic blanket ocean
We can only watch as the bugs
Conquer like a million Napoleons
Now we must surely know
Man is not in control
We own not the ground beneath our feet

I could only pray the doubt would wash away
The moment all my neighbors heard the news
Then we could be informed
South America wasn't warned
California, put on your running shoes
