Brian Lawley - Hey Dad, I Love You [Original]
Born in 1932, in the era of steel and trains
Parents were poor, they worked really hard
By grandma, he was raised
Got a Ph.D. in metallurgy
Loved music and he loved to sing
Ken Lawley was my Dad and…
I miss him
Couldn’t afford a piano
So they got him an accordion
Later he would sing at Tanglewood
With the Pops in Boston
His dream was to be an opera star
Or conductor of a symphony
Ken Lawley was my Dad
And, I miss him
Hey Dad, I love you
Hey Dad, I miss you
I’m so proud to be the one
That you call your Son
Taught artillery in the army
Livin’ in El Paso
A scientist and a Physics teacher
Students hated and loved him so
A gentle man with deep, deep faith
His life was the song he lived
Ken Lawley was my Dad
And, I miss him
Married in his twenties
Two kids and a custom home
Then, one day the kids moved away
A divorce and he was alone
Found a great new wife
Built another life
And a second family
Ken Lawley was my Dad
Though I barely knew him
Hey Dad, I love you
Hey Dad, I miss you
And though you didn’t know me well
I know that you could tell
That I’m so proud to be the one
That you call your Son
Never forget when we moved
To Californ-IA
Visiting him in Boston
I cried as I drove away
Before he died in 2021
He got to hear this song
I know I’m gonna see him again
And he’ll sing along
Hey Dad, I love you
Hey Dad, I miss you
Hey Dad, I love you
Hey Dad, I miss you
