Stagecoach Stokes - The Habit

Sandy fell down right in the middle of the street
She was walking with a wobble and her pupils weren't neat
Almost three weeks gone on a bender of ket and codeine
The Sandy that I knew used to function really nice
She would smile for the pictures and shine in the lights
But the drugs that were never a problem started becoming her whole thing
Now what if you were there when she started running down the path
And what if you could've helped her but were left to see the aftermath
And what if it was you who gave her the habit
How would you feel?
How would you feel
Sandy nodded off right in the middle of her drink
At the club in San Francisco where they knew her by her slink
By the boas in her hair and her bottle of whiskey
She's still going round at that motorcade hotel
Where the users and the dealers go to get their hands on stuff
Where a check-out could last forever if you weren't careful
Now what if you had plans on the fateful night she breathed her last
And what if you forgot cuz you were busy getting glassed
And what if you could've helped her kick her habit?
How would you feel?
How did she feel?
I wish that I could say I wouldn't feel anything at all
But you know I'd be out there squabbling in the cold
"Sandy, baby, come inside:
The only thing in here that can hurt you is your reflection in the mirror"
Life is good, and life is long
Don't live to regret what wasn't said
You've got to get it while you can
You've got to tell her while you can
You've got to love her while you can
Sandy went home on the frigid overnight express
Back to the town of hostile insults
That ran her out when she was thin
And she felt the hate of wrath for somebody different
Maybe it sent her round
Maybe being round was her thing
Or maybe it was the overwhelming burden
Of being seen by everything
But Sandy barely got to do any rounding
No she didn't
No Sandy did not
Now what if she were living,
If everything was still on plan?
When you could reach and touch her
Feel her cheek beneath your hand
Now what if all it takes to save her is to dissuade the habit?
How would that feel?
