Edward Sexton - Clown Song (Folk Fiction)

Now the Jack of All Lies, he steps into the room
He prances on the stage
He's wearing his pretty costume and his make up
He's playing Apollo in a rage

And he calls for silence from the gallery
As the cannons fire from the ocean view
Into the side of the Prima Donna
She died right there, her lips were still blue

And Jack is left alone on the stage
And he's looking me dead in the eyes
Like I've got something from him to hide
I stand up and said, can't you see my friend
We're wearing different costumes but we're the same inside

I showed him into my room
You know it used to be just a match light and a cage
But now I've got these pretty shoes and things
That I wear upon the stage

And Jack saw the masks I once wore
And he got a little jealous of me
I never told him as he put one on
How hard it gets to see

He says I'm blinded
I said, no it's just the light
Sit there and stay still and you'll feel alright
You won't be missed, you won't be remembered
But you'll become the very thing you dream of at night

So Jack sat there and he asked me
What happened to the last Apollo
I just shrugged and said
He got into this petty argument
But the next day, they found his heart on display
He got shot like some kind of president

Jack got up too quick and made for the door
Saying, I can't end up like that
I said, that's alright, you can make it on your own
But I'm gonna need that mask back

He screams to me, You didn't take my power
I just forgot my strength
You don't know what I'm capable of
As I balance on the length
Of your telephone wire

So I pick it up, the long distance operator
He speak so sweet to me
He asked me what I was calling for
If it was something I could just hear
Or something I needed to see

So I ran down to the streets below
There's a carnival in the town
You can see all the lovers crying there
As their Ferris wheel burned down

And the clown is wearing handcuffs
He tells me they're just for fun
But the Brakeman in his polka dot boiler suit
Told me he's really on the run

I said, who from
He's not done anything wrong
Though I can see the jewellery
Hanging from his thumb

The Brakeman said, he stolen from you my friend
Can't you see your heart between his thighs
And that is when I realised
He was just one more Stenterello singing of his lies
