With Stones in His Pockets - The Canal

I took the steps down to the canal
I'd smelled smoke from about half a mile back
Saw the flickering red light
It could have been anything
A malfunctioning street light
It could have been a vehicle indicating
Or a red moon in the sky
It could have been a pelican crossing
And that's when I heard the bang
It could have been a car backfiring
But when I got down to the canal
It was the worst thing I've never seen
