REAMES - Footprints In Stone

The red sun baked our skin into the earth
As a cloud of dust swirled aimlessly above our heads
A myriad of sand flies sank into our flesh
Water, a distant memory,
A far flung hope from a prior generation
Every step, a desire more than an action,
Carried us to an inevitable destiny:
A hail of stones making homes
In the meat next to our bones
Fragments of a memory birthed
From the field of blood, were worth
The night terrors they would bring
And then erode away as the sea
Carried forward on the current of time
Decaying gradually traces of our selves
We leave forever like a footprint in stone
A case study for our future
Telling our history of despair
Like we were never here
A footnote in the cosmos
There was nothing but despair and ruin
A tragedy unfolded by our own undoing
There was never hope
We'd traveled too far
Betrayed in the end by our own life-sustaining star
Our eyes see not
Our ears don't hear
Our skin, it melts
The water's not clear
The weapons of war litter the floor
We're too weak for conflict anymore
Destiny, in time, left us behind
Forever alone
Forever at home
Life is hell
Our star fell
Forever alone
Forever at home
Life is hell
Our star fell
Forever alone
Forever at home
