Online juggernaut Amazon has released its own chart of the world’s top tunes according to Alexa, its home AI system, and the tracks which users ask it to search for.
The list ranks the songs that Alexa users have been unable to identify via normal means, and instead offered Amazon’s little black box some of a song’s most recognised lyrics. In other words, people are asking Alexa to play the song that goes like “I got sunshine in my pocket”, with the answer returned being, of course, Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling”.
In the Top 50 lyric requests published by Amazon, JT actually appears three times for fairly innocent requests. We are slightly less sure about entry number 13 on Amazon’s list, which seems to suggest that most users are not clear that “we all live in a yellow submarine” comes from the mighty Beatles’ smash hit, Yellow Submarine. The clue’s in the name, guys!
"The Top 50 Alexa lyrics chart now gives music lovers insight into what makes a memorable lyric, opening a window into an entirely new way for fans to search for music, and some of the results might surprise you," a company rep said in announcing the chart.
Below are the top 10 lyric requests made of Amazon’s Alexa around the world (imagine each lyric with the prefix “Alexa, can you play that song that goes...?”):
