Robert Johnson Howard - Bare Bones Again

I work hard to make my living but I've never had much success
I put some cash away for a another day, don't live life to excess
But that' ole sun is never shining on my money making schemes
People just tend to wipe me and wash away my dreams
Well I think I've been lied to and it's driving me insane
They don't cut me slack and their holding me back, but what have they got to gain

Every time I make a break through
And I'm moving on up the chain
I get knocked down by those I trusted
And I'm back to bare bones again

Take this one dude from Miami; he sure took me for a ride
He's comes on like Dr. Jekyll, turns into Mr. Hyde
He hiding behind his candor and faking his state of mind
He was my wing commander until he robbed me blind
I had high hopes for a windfall but instead it was a bust
He took me to the cleaners and then put me on a bus

Every time I make a break through
And I'm moving on up the chain
I get knocked down by those I trusted
And I'm back to bare bones again

Mr. Suit, he's got an angle, he turns all things into green
If you're smart you don't tangle with his big ole money machine
I may get on board that train but that ride will seldom last
I'm just excessive baggage in his endless pursuit of cash
I don't knock myself for trying but in the end I must confess
It's a waste of effort crying because I'm just superfluous

Every time I make a break through
And I'm moving on up the chain
I get knocked down by those I trusted
And I'm back to bare bones again

Well I think I've been lied to and it's driving me insane
They don't cut me slack and they're holding me back, but what have they got to gain

Every time I make a break through
And I'm moving on up the chain
I get knocked down by those I trusted
And I'm back to bare bones again
