Solid Advice - Beware

All the silver mines were set aflame
So we danced in the evening light
We prayed to the stars but help never came
And all the horses began to starve

The knock-kneed boy ran into the waves
And drove his fists into the old sea wall
We covered our scars with gauze and mud
While he hollered out a wordless squall

By the fifteenth day, all we men of god
Were scrawling blasphemies in the sand
We killed a stranded whale
To restore our faith, we let the blood run down our chins

We fashioned knives from its bones
And coats from the skin
I made a satchel of a dead man's heart

The burning water and the birds
Were cursed for fools
As we sank into a faceless dark

I spied an inland road
That was carved from the stone
We kicked the chalk up into thin white clouds
There were young green pines
Swaying in the wind
But the coast was ever in our minds

And then a valley opened up
As wide as the sky
I met a woman with blue eyes there
I see no need to roam
In the children we've raised and of the sea
I say only beware

Beware
Beware
Beware
Beware
